Things that move in the dark

Many Australian animals are nocturnal so not visible during the day. They rest in a burrow or tree during the day and come out at night to feed and play. Possums, bats and bandicoots are some on the animals that move around here while you are asleep. During the day we can find evidence that they were here.

Bandicoots dig holes beside the paths searching for roots and insects.

Possums leave scratch marks on trees. They all leave scats (droppings) around.

Have a look...

Can you see any evidence of nocturnal animals in this area?

Nocturnal animals are very active at HWCA. It is a fascinating experience to participate in a night walk to discover what is moving around finding food and looking for a quiet spot to rest during the day.

As well as Possums in the canopy and Bandicoots scuttling along the ground, Fishing Bats may be spotted skimming backwards and forwards across the Canoe Channel.
